Choosing Optical Drives for your

Custom PC

There are basically 3 different modules to consider for your PC.  We will always install one of them in your system as life would be difficult without one.  The exception to this is usually workstations where unauthorised media could be destructive etc.

CD/DVD Player - We use the the latest drives and these allow you to play back pre-recorded CDs and DVDs.  These will be SATA drives (although some legacy IDE drives are available for specialist builds we can do).  We recommend you include one of these drives and compliment it with a DVD or Blu Ray Writer.  This allows you to copy from disc to disc rather than having to use the Hard Drive.

CD/DVD Writer - Again, by default these are the latest SATA optical drives and allow recording direct to CD or DVD - up to 8.5GB of storage on a DVD dual layer disc.

Blu-Ray; Care - two alternatives.  There are Blu-Ray Readers and the Blu-Ray Writers.  The first will playback Blu-Ray discs and allow recording to CD/DVD.  The latter will allow recording to Blu-Ray and CD/DVD.  Blu-Ray is an  essential component for a High Definition system.

Depending on the system you choose, the optical drives will be chosen from the following:-

• LG
• Liteon
• Sony
